Phosphorus is the 6th most important element in the human body. It is mainly present in the form of phosphates.
Phosphates participate in many biological processes and are key components in DNA, cell structures, cellular energy transfer as well as bones and teeth. Phosphates are essential for the health of all living things. And, because our body regularly removes phosphates through the kidneys, it is vital that we maintain a steady phosphate intake.
The minimum recommended amount of phosphorus per day is 700 mg per adult, 800 mg for a pregnant or breastfeeding woman, and 1250 mg for an adolescent.
It is important to balance calcium and phosphate intake, as high doses of one can interfere with the absorption of the other. This is why a minority of women will also need to take dietary phosphate supplements when taking calcium supplements to treat osteoporosis.
Phosphates also have incredible food preservation properties. Without them, a lot of farm produce wouldn’t have time to reach your plate.
They are particularly effective at
- Preserving natural taste and color
- Keeping meat and seafood fresh
- Stopping the development of certain bacteria
- Maintaining the homogeneity of dairy products
- Helping the development of good bacteria in cheeses
- Reactivating certain compounds in pharmaceuticals
- Keeping running water safe and clean

We work closely with the relevant local and federal authorities, and our internal response teams are trained to handle any incident. We regularly organize simulation exercises, in collaboration with the competent authorities and the emergency services, so that everyone is prepared to react effectively if needed.
